Cost-effective solution to extend wi-fi to bottom of my garden
I recently purchased the WavLink AC600 Wi-Fi Extender to enable me to extend wi-fi access to the bottom of my garden (to reach my tortoise houses). This ensures a good wi-fi signal which is need to control the heating / lighting / basking lamps. I am pleased to say, it has exceeded my expectations. It is important to note that speed of the wi-fi is not important to me as I will not be using it for anything more than simple controlling of on/off switches. It looks a bit like a cattle prodder and when mounted on my garden fence, the WavLink AC600 stands out like a sore thumb. Setting it up was quick and simple, thanks to some very helpful YouTube videos. The instructions provided in the manual were okay, but I am one of those people who need visual instructions to follow. I connected it and initially set it up in my house, and within minutes, I had it up and running, extending my Wi-Fi coverage.I had hoped to be able to plug this in to my waterproof outdoor garden socket, but unfortunately the plug head of the WavLink AC600 is too large to fit into a standard UK outdoor waterproof socket. My solution was to plug in an outdoor extension lead into said outdoor garden socket and place the other end of the extension lead into a Masterplug waterproof box. I could then plug in the WavLink into said extension lead and secure the connections safely in the waterproof box. Simple! I wasn’t sure the WavLink would work well when plugged into an extension lead rather than a fixed plug socket, but it seems to work just as well as it did when I set it up in my house. The WavLink AC600 has effectively eliminated the poor wi-fi connectivity I was experiencing towards the bottom end of my garden. It does apparently work on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz – however the devices I have connected to it only work on 2.4GHz and so I can only comment on that connectivity. Prior to installing the WavLink AC600 I was constantly experiencing dropped signals and receiving messages from various apps that control devices that the wi-fi signal was too weak. I haven’t received any such messages since installation. The WavLink AC600 has proved to be a very cost-effective solution for extending the reach of my home wi-fi.

Easy to set up, worked straight out of the box and excellent signal
Purchased the Access Point to improve the signal to my garden office, some 25 metres away from the house. I had previously been using a TP link product and could only achieve 10-15 Mbs at best (and often less) from a 73 Mbs in the house. I have a 25m ethernet cable run from the BT router to the access point and then a further 25m to the Garden Office. The product was very easy to set up (aided by the videos on Youtube) and I am now getting 50-60 Mbs in the Garden Office.

Somewhat better than using an aerial with outdoor extension lead
Our old setup – which this replaced – was a regular indoor 2.4GHz access-point with remote outdoor aerial on 3m of 50-ohm coax. The WavLink gives slightly improved 2.4GHz signal compared to the old set-up, but not dramatically better. Though, of course, we gain a 5GHz option as well.Devices (phone, laptop) which are at roughly the same height as the WavLink’s aerials can reliably access a 3-out-of-five-bar 2.4GHz signal when about 30m away, but they need to be somewhat closer to reliably use the 5GHz.Accessing setup via the WavLink’s web page was pretty simple. Just power it up, connect to it wirelessly from a laptop, and you’re able to logon and configure. Configuration itself requires a bit of WiFi knowledge, but that’s true of almost any stand-alone wireless access-point: because very few WiFi devices – other than ready-configured router-modems included with line-rental packages – are going to come pre-configured with unique WiFi and admin passwords and with the WiFi channels properly set up for use in the UK.All-round it’s a good WiFi access-point for outdoor use in a modest-sized garden. And – provided you’re happy to screw it to a wall because it has no stand – it would work well indoors too. With the £15-off-voucher which was (seemingly at random) offered to us at check-out this device was excellent value. If you have to pay RRP… well, you still wouldn’t complain.

Couldn’t get it to work!
Set-up as per instructions and was able to connect via WiFi but all attempts to access the configuration menus failed whether I used the URL or the IP address (as picked up from my “main” router) – 404 or timeout. Lost track of how many times I’ve used the reset button (which in itself is a frustrating experience as it frequently does nothing!). Have now spent several hours on multiple days trying to get access but with no luck – patience is wearing thin!.Edit – Update March 2022: Reset button is most definitely not working and attempts to login to config menu still failing despite multiple attempts over the last couple of weeks. Not going to waste anymore time with this kit – will now look for an alternative, different, make!

Excellent performance and range
I built a summerhouse at the bottom of my garden and work from home. I needed a good strong signal for the laptop and purchased this. It’s been working flawlessly since fitting. I work taking calls over the Internet and require a stable connection. This has been amazing and I have never had any drop in signal. I tested the speed and it’s great.Would highly recommend.
