Pleasantly surprised
I have a smartphone but I like to have a second phone as a spare, an emergency phone, a phone I can leave in the car without worrying, a backup 2FA number, and a number I can give out for delivery notifications etc without becoming a phishing target. I used an old Nokia for many years for these purposes but I’ve been looking for a replacement due to the 3G switch-off.I tried a cheap 4G phone first, but it was truly awful. The Tradesman 2F is 2x the price and 5x better! It has a big, bright, crisp display, well thought out menu and a good operating system. There are lots of unexpected extra features, for example you can set up an auto power on/off schedule which is ideal for my purposes and will greatly extend battery life.It is chunky like a torch, and in fact it is a torch, but that is fine for what I need. The negatives so far are:1. A tight rubber bung covering the USB-C charging port. Obviously it is to keep the water out but it is awkward and would be a pest if you were charging it every day. However, at least they include a spare bung!2. The camera is not very good. There is little difference between image quality settings. That’s normal for a basic “feature phone” but it lets down the quality of this one and wouldn’t be much use to a tradesman.

Rugged and actually floats
If your job involves water, mud, or high-pressure washers, this is a fantastic bit of kit. I’ve been using the Tradesman 2F as a straight-talking work phone, and it feels specifically built for the garage or a messy construction site.The standout feature is definitely the floating design. It gives huge peace of mind if you’re working near a marina or a pool; knowing it won’t sink to the bottom if it slips out of your hand is a game changer. The buttons are chunky and glove-friendly, which is perfect for when you’re mid-task and need to take a quick call. It’s shrugged off a few drops and heavy rain without a single issue.On the flip side, the battery is a bit smaller at 1150mAh compared to some other rugged models, so while it gets through a full workday easily, you’ll still want to keep an eye on it. The screen is basic and the features are minimal, but that’s the point. It’s a reliable tool you can toss in a tool bag and trust to work.

JCB Tradesman 2F Phone.
Excellent no nonsense phone if all you need is phone calls and texts. Only downside is giving the ability to float if dropped in water means reducing size of battery to save on weight. My old CAT Phone (very similar to the JCB) had a battery almost double the size and so only needed charging about once a week. Now I have to charge up every 2 – 3 days.

Great Basic Work Phone
Brilliant little rugged phone, simple and dependable. Easy to setup, back is a bit fiddly to remove, as is getting the SIM card in but once that’s done it’s the most straightforward phone in the world. Call quality and signal seems good, battery life is excellent. Buttons are nice and tactile, decent size, just about usable with gloves on. The screen is crisp and bright.It’s like having a modern Nokia 3410, very solid device with a nice simple menu, basic functionality but it just works!
