Great in principle, falls down on practicality.
Supplied in a presentation box with the machine (tank, heater and pump), screw-in holder for the supplied 2 sizes of pod holder and separate ground coffee holder, metal stand, plastic cup, USB charging cable and a flimsy drawstring bag.Oh, and the worst set of instructions imaginable – tiny text and confusingly laid out, impossible to read.I was planning to use this with ground espresso blend only, not pods. Call me a tree hugger but I just prefer it.To start with, I loaded the unit with clean water (it only holds 100ml) and set it to Heating Extraction (long press) to purge it before use. It heated to 72 degrees, not 90, which took around 9 minutes with cold water.Went to make a test coffee and it came up with the error code “EE”. Battery dead.Took 4.5hrs to charge fully. The indicator shows charge level in 10% increments.After that, first proper test run. Loaded the metal grounds carrier with my fave espresso blend, loaded it with cold tap water and waited for the display to climb from 10deg ambient to 90deg… and waited… and waited.After 10.5 minutes it reached 90 degrees and it started a 60 second countdown, after which it delivered a really quite pleasant cup of espresso with a very decent crema. So I’m impressed, right?Loaded it again and started it again from 40deg. 9.5 minutes later, it delivered a less pleasant cup of coffee, but this time it only reached 83deg before delivering.Third time, it reached 63deg and promptly shut off. Battery dead. It can’t be used while charging.So in a nutshell this will make one good cup of espresso in heating extraction mode, followed by one mediocre one, after 4.5hrs charging and 20minutes waiting.I am at a loss to see how this is of practical use to most people. Yes, you could add hot water to save power consumption, in which case you may as well use an alternative caffeine delivery system. Yes, you could take it camping for one good cup of coffee for one person, but a trangia is marginally less hassle and faster.It weighs around 900g in total with accessories so you probably won’t be taking it in your EDC bag if you fancy a coffee on the move.On the positive side, it’s well made and the fit of accessories is good – no leaks or dribbles. It also makes *one* good cup of coffee. The stand could be sturdier (mine was out or true on arrival) and the cup is a matter of taste but we’ll insulated. It’s also very easy to clean.Priced at £55.99 at time of review, this is little more than an expensive novelty gadget which is great in principle but falls flat in practice. 2 stars only because it’s mostly well made and not hazardous.

Being a person who not only loves gadgets but also coffee, this was a very welcome item to review. The SOPPY Portable Coffee Machine. A rechargeable and useful device!First off, the appearance. Very smart looking with sleek lines and made from Stainless Steel, ABS and PC. All known for their tough, lightweight and virtually unbreakable properties.It will use either cold water, which it then heats in around 8-10 minutes or 90° hot water which is then ready to use.It seems to make more sense to use hot water than wait for the whole heating process, which will take up battery very quicklyBy using hot water, you can make around 10x as many cups of coffee than with cold water on one chargeThe machine has two different compartments and can use either coffee grounds or two types of capsules .I first tried the ground coffee option and the 20bar pump delivered my beverage with a rich aroma and a good thick crema!I have Dolce Gusto pods already, so I use those mostly, for convenience.It will of course only make Espresso but you can add your own milk if preferred.I actually prefer to do this as the ready, milky coffee pods are usually too weak a taste.This item is not dishwasher safe, but its easy to clean after use because of its multi component design.Although all the materials are lightweight, the Coffee Machine is actually pretty solid and has a bit of weight, just over 500gm so probably a little heavy for some hiking or mountain climbing in the Highlands. But it’s ideal for camping, caravanning, light hiking or just a day out and it supports 12V USB charging in the car. Its also great for having your own coffee machine at the desk.I keep mine in my home office and it saves me having to nip out to the kitchen.I didn’t have any problem with leaks or with its general performance.I found it to do exactly what it supposed to and without fuss.I don’t like the ugly stand. But it’s serviceable.I don’t like the plastic cup, so I changed it to one I did like.All in, this is a gadget I would be happy to buy.Recommended
